Meerabai and Her Devotion to Krishna (मीराबाई का कृष्ण-प्रेम)

The story of Princess Meera’s devotion and surrender to Krishna, regarded as a model of courage and love.

Meerabai was born in the royal family of Merta. From childhood she felt boundless love for Shri Krishna. Tradition says that as a little girl, on seeing a wedding procession, she asked her mother who her bridegroom was, and her mother playfully pointed to an idol of Shri Krishna.

She was married to Bhojraj, a prince of Mewar. Even living in the palace, Meera’s mind remained absorbed in Krishna. She sang bhajans and kept the company of saints, which her in-laws did not like.

Folk tales say she was troubled in many ways. But Meera neither bore ill will toward anyone nor gave up her devotion. Her verses are still sung today as bhajans.

Meera later went towards Vrindavan and Dwarka. Tradition says that in Dwarka she merged into the idol of Shri Krishna. In simple language, her verses reflect love, surrender and fearlessness.
