Traditional story (retold)
Part 1: Savitri and Satyavan
Savitri, the daughter of King Ashvapati of the Madra country, chose as her husband Satyavan, a prince living in the forest, although Narada had said that he would die in a year.
Part 2: Under the Banyan
On the appointed day Satyavan fell down while cutting wood. Savitri sat under the banyan tree with his head in her lap. Yamaraj took his life and went on his way.
Part 3: The Conversation with Yamaraj
Savitri kept walking behind Yamaraj. Pleased with her wise words, Yamaraj granted boons: her father-in-law's sight, the kingdom and, in the end, a boon of a hundred sons.
Part 4: The Husband's Return
Because of the boon of sons, Satyavan's life had to be returned. Savitri returned finding her husband alive. From that time the tradition of the Vat Savitri vrat has been held.
Thus ends the complete Vat Savitri Vrat Katha
