Traditional story (retold)
Part 1: The Worship of Indra and Krishna's Question
In the Dvapara Yuga the people of Gokul prepared every year to worship Indra for rain. The child Krishna asked Nanda Baba, "Why do we do this puja?" Nanda Ji said that Indra gives the rain. Krishna said, "Our cows get their fodder from Mount Govardhan. We should worship him."
Part 2: Indra's Anger
The people of Braj accepted Krishna's word, worshipped Govardhan and offered Annakut. Learning this, Indra was very angry and began a torrential rain on Braj.
Part 3: Holding up Govardhan
All the people came to Krishna in fear. Krishna lifted Mount Govardhan on his little finger and gave everyone shelter beneath it. The rain went on for seven days, but no one suffered any hardship.
Part 4: Indra's Repentance
In the end Indra realised his mistake, came to Krishna's feet and asked forgiveness. Kamadhenu also performed Krishna's abhishek. From that time the tradition of Govardhan Puja began.
Thus ends the complete Govardhan Puja Katha
