Traditional story (retold)

Part 1: The Churning of the Ocean and Lakshmi

The Puranas tell that during the churning of the ocean by the gods and the asuras, Mother Lakshmi appeared around Kartik Amavasya and chose Lord Vishnu as her husband. In memory of this, Lakshmi puja is held on Deepavali.

Part 2: King Bali and the Offering of Lamps

One katha tells of the release of the gods imprisoned by King Bali and the return of Lakshmi Ji, in memory of which lamps are lit. This episode is told in different forms according to region.

Part 3: The Hard-working Farmer and Lakshmi

In a folk tale Lakshmi Ji lives in the house of a hard-working and truthful farmer. When laziness and discord came into the house she went away, and when cleanliness, hard work and love came again she returned. The message of the katha is that Lakshmi stays where there is hard work and harmony.
