Traditional story (retold)
Part 1: Yoganidra
According to the Puranas, from Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi Lord Vishnu goes into yoganidra on the serpent Shesha's couch in the Ocean of Milk. These four months are called Chaturmas.
Part 2: A King's Rule
In a kingdom everyone kept the Ekadashi vrat. Once a man came to the king asking for work. The king said that on Ekadashi he would get only fruit food. He accepted, but tormented by hunger he said that fruit does not fill the stomach. The king gave him grain.
Part 3: The Test of Devotion
He cooked the food and invited the Lord. The Lord came, but pleased with his simple feeling he ate with him and took him to his abode. The king understood that a vrat succeeds through purity of mind, not through rules alone.
Thus ends the complete Dev Uthani Ekadashi Katha
