Traditional story (retold)

Part 1: Priyavrata and Malini

According to one katha, King Priyavrata and Queen Malini had no child. Maharshi Kashyapa had a yajna performed and gave a prasad of kheer. The queen ate the prasad and had a son, but he was born dead.

Part 2: Goddess Shashthi

The grieving king took his son's body to the cremation ground. Just then Goddess Shashthi appeared, who is said to be Brahma's mind-born daughter. She brought the child back to life and said that the devotees who worship her will have their children protected.

Part 3: The Tradition of the Vrat

The king had the Shashthi puja proclaimed in the city. From that time the tradition of Chhath Puja on Kartik Shukla Shashthi began. In folk tales, worship of the Sun by Sita and Draupadi is also mentioned.

Thus ends the complete Chhath Puja Katha
