In the war of Lanka, Ravana’s son Meghnad struck Lakshmana unconscious with the Shakti weapon. Shri Ram’s heart was filled with anguish and grief spread through the monkey army.
Vibhishana suggested calling Lanka’s physician, Sushena. After examining Lakshmana, Sushena said that the Sanjeevani herb grows on Dronagiri in the Himalayas and must be brought before sunrise.
Everyone wondered who could go so far in so little time. Then Hanuman folded his hands and said to Shri Ram, “Lord, give the command and I will surely bring it.”
Hanuman flew to the Himalayas, but countless herbs were glowing there and he could not identify the Sanjeevani. As time was short, he lifted the entire Dronagiri mountain.
On the way back, as he passed over Ayodhya, Bharata mistook him for a demon and shot an arrow. Hanuman fell, saying “Ram, Ram.” When Bharata learned the truth he was deeply remorseful and sent Hanuman off with respect.
Sushena gave Lakshmana the Sanjeevani and he recovered. Shri Ram embraced Hanuman. In tradition this episode stands for Hanuman’s spirit of service, valour and humility.
